It was the final week of Uni and we were right in the middle of exams when a Hong Kong fella and 2 Irish guys asked me to drive them to Providence in Rhode Island to watch the wrestling. It meant driving 4 hours on Sunday night to watch WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment - I just learnt they changed their name from WWF to avoid confusion with the World Wildlife Fund), and then driving 4 hours back, arriving home 3am Monday morning and then sitting a final the same day. But the boys offered to pay all my expenses and then some, so what could I say... of course I went. Armageddon had all the hype of the WWE along with a full blown cage match using chairs, tables and chains as weapons. It was good to see but I'm by now means hooked, its all such a big facade and I couldn't understand why people were cheering when every match was completely rigged.
I finished my exams, finished school, and moved down to NYC. My first night back in town I went to Madison Square Garden. Public transport was on strike and ques for taxis were 2 blocks long and being coordinated by police. I just walked to the match from my hostel. It was a good game and there was a punch up too. It all goes pretty fast, players are coming on and off every 45 seconds. I saw the New York Rangers play the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Rangers kicked their butts which all us New Yorkers were very happy about.
My sister Rachel came over for a holiday with 2 friends Susie and Liz. I had missed my sister's 21st about a month earlier and owed her a birthday present. I took her out to see the basketball, the New York Knicks play the New Jersey Nets. Being adjacent states there were a number of supporters for both teams present. It was a good game with plenty of cheering and an exciting unsuccessful attempt at a comeback by the Knicks with the Nets taking the game.
